Our detailed review

What is Malt in 2026?

Malt is a French freelance mission platform: you create a profile, companies contact you or you answer their needs, and Malt handles the contract, invoicing and payment. The company claims more than 550,000 European freelancers. It follows the mission model (often several weeks or months) rather than the fixed-price packaged service, which sets it apart from a marketplace like Fiverr.

Malt's argument is security: a turnkey administrative framework, a cash advance and mission cover. The price of that framework is a commission, which drops as the relationship with the client lasts.

The fees: a decreasing commission

Here is what Malt states in its help centre (checked in October 2026). On the freelance side, the commission is 10% excl. VAT on a first mission, 5% excl. VAT after 6 months of missions with the same client, and 2% excl. VAT when you invite your own client onto Malt. It is calculated on the amount you invoice excluding VAT. At the end of the project, Malt sends you a separate invoice for these fees.

On the client side, service fees come on top: 5% with the Starter offer, 9% with the Advanced offer (which comes with a dedicated Account Manager), and a custom rate for Enterprise. These fees are paid by the client, on top of your commission.

The most interesting lever for you: bringing your own clients. A mission with a client you invite onto Malt costs only 2%, against 10% for a first mission found through the platform.

What the fees pay for

According to Malt, the commission funds the admin tools (invoices, reminders), customer support, a cash advance that pays you as soon as the mission ends even if the client pays at 30 or 45 days, and mission protection cover of up to 20 million euros. Malt also mentions professional liability insurance taken out with Hiscox. The Super Malter status (levels 1 to 3) rewards activity, calculated over a rolling 15 months.

The cash advance is probably the most concrete service when your clients are large accounts that pay late. For the cover, read the terms: it is mission protection, not professional liability insurance in your name.

What users say

On Trustpilot, Malt shows 3.5/5 ("Average") over 1,547 reviews as of 7 October 2026, but only 56 over the last twelve months, which shows that the recent volume is low. On Google, Malt's listing shows 3.8/5 over 252 reviews. Satisfied freelancers mention automated invoicing, project tracking and responsive support.

Criticisms are numerous and come back to three topics. First the lack of missions: several freelancers describe months, sometimes years, without a proposal despite a complete profile. Then the commission, seen as high by some. Finally a more serious point: one review reports commissions wrongly counted in the revenue declared to URSSAF (the French social contributions body), and Malt replies that the parties involved are looking for the origin of the discrepancies and that URSSAF will not collect anything in the meantime. If you invoice through Malt, check your income summary.

To read these ratings with perspective: according to Trustpilot, Malt regularly invites its customers to leave a review, replies to 82% of its negative reviews and usually within 48 hours.

What we like less

Three reservations. Malt does not guarantee missions: it is a showcase and a framework, not an automatic source of business, and several reviews are a harsh reminder of that. The 10% commission on first missions weighs on your margin, especially at the start. Finally the income declaration: as long as the reported discrepancies are not fully cleared up, it is better to check your income summary every year before declaring your revenue.

Our verdict

Malt gives freelancers a real framework: automated invoicing, cash advance, mission protection and a commission that drops as the relationship lasts. We recommend it to freelancers who already have clients and can invite them to get down to 2%. Reviews are a reminder that it does not guarantee missions: several freelancers describe months without a proposal, and there is a point to watch on the URSSAF declaration (the French social contributions body).
