Shine is a 100% online business account aimed at self-employed people, freelancers and small businesses. It is a payment institution authorised by the ACPR (the French banking supervisor), not a bank in the traditional sense: your customers' funds are held in a safeguarding account at Société Générale, and are neither invested nor lent out. Shine claims 150,000 customers and was acquired by Cegid in November 2025, a publisher of management and accounting software. The company says the team and the app are not changing.
Its edge over a classic online bank: invoicing lives in the same tool as the account. You create your quotes and invoices, you get paid, and the transactions feed into a dashboard with a social contributions estimate. It is this combination, more than the bank card, that makes it appealing for a freelancer.
Shine is aimed at businesses registered in France (foreign freelancers based in France included).
The Free plan is €0 excl. VAT (HT)/month, with no commitment. It includes an account with a French IBAN, a virtual card, three free transfers and direct debits per month and unlimited quotes and invoices. E-invoicing, which has become mandatory for receiving, is included free in all plans: Shine is an Accredited Platform (Plateforme Agréée), so there is no extra software to pay for to be compliant.
For starting out as a micro-entrepreneur or with a company with few transactions, that is enough. The limits of Free then show up quickly: three transfers per month, a physical card as an option (€7 excl. VAT), card payments outside the euro zone at 2% and a withdrawal cap of €250 over a rolling 30 days.
The prices below are monthly billing, with the annual-payment price in brackets (checked on shine.fr in October 2026). Start, Plus and Business come with a 30-day free trial.
You can switch from one plan to another at any time, and Shine states there is no commitment. The fees to anticipate are elsewhere: cash deposits charged as a percentage (5% on Free, 2% on Business), international transfers and foreign-currency payments depending on the plan.
Two points where Shine stands out. First, e-invoicing: sending and receiving are already operational, with no paid option. Second, customer service, based in France and reachable 7 days a week by phone or in writing. Shine says it was voted Customer Service of the Year 2026 in the online business banking category, three years in a row.
On Trustpilot, Shine shows 4.6/5 on 7,732 reviews as of 7 October 2026, including 1,746 over the last twelve months: a very solid volume. Positive feedback keeps coming back to the quick account opening and the responsiveness of the advisers.
Negative reviews are a minority but regularly of the same kind: difficulty reaching support in some cases, funds temporarily blocked after a card pre-authorisation (a car rental for example) and invoicing bugs on VAT or currencies. Two useful clarifications: Shine highlights 4.8 on its own site while Trustpilot showed 4.6 on the date of our check, and according to Trustpilot the company regularly asks its customers to leave a review and has replied to 3% of its negative reviews.
Three reservations. The account cannot be overdrawn: if your cash flow is irregular, that is a real constraint, unlike some traditional banks. Cash and cheques are poorly served: cash deposits at 2% to 5% and low withdrawal caps on the small plans, so avoid it if your activity depends on them. Finally, some reviews mention slow support when the problem is complex: if you keep all your cash there, keep a backup second account (Shine also says many customers use it alongside their bank).
If you are hesitating, we have compared business accounts for freelancers in our business account comparison, and set Shine against its main competitor in the Qonto vs Shine comparison (with our Qonto review). For the overview of the options, see the Shine alternatives.
If Shine suits you, a welcome offer applies when you go through our link: the conditions are on the Shine deal page.

Shine is an excellent starting point: a genuinely useful free plan, e-invoicing included and customer service reachable 7 days a week. We recommend it to freelancers who are starting out or who want to separate their business finances without paying a bank subscription. The account cannot be overdrawn and cash deposits are charged as a percentage: if you need them regularly, look at the alternatives first.
